Tom Hopkins, Treasurer

I’m Tom Hopkins, your GAMVPA treasurer.  I was born in Spokane, Washington in 1948.  For Christmas 1955, my Mom made me a uniform out of some of my Dad’s leftover WWII USAAF garb.  I have been playing Army ever since, including a tour in Vietnam with the US Army Engineer Command, 92nd Engineer Battalion (Construction).

I started riding motorcycles on and off-road in ‘68.  I got interested in British bikes like Triumphs and BSAs.  In the mid-seventies the British government began selling off their remaining inventory of WWII motorcycles and a couple of 1943 BSA WM20 bikes came up for sale in Atlanta in 1974.  I bought them and kept them for a couple of years, but parts and information were hard to find back then, so I sold them.  Over time, the electronic information revolution made it easier to buy parts and do research overseas, so I bought 3 more BSA WM20s in the late ‘80s and I still have 2 of these primitive machines.

My expensive hobbies were supported by a career with the Environmental Protection Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.  I retired in 2006, but the GAMVPA connection began 10 years earlier.  In 1996, a reorganization at the State Capitol complex put me in an office next to Karen Williams.  Karen is the wife of Cal Williams, who was GAMVPA president at that time.  When Karen found out that I owned a military vehicle, she started bugging me to bring it to the Fall Rally at Helen.  I finally took one of my bikes to the 1997 Rally, but I didn’t join the club until July 2000.  Richard Grace was club treasurer then, but he stepped down at the end of 2002 and Cal nominated me to replace Richard.

I started as treasurer in January 2003.  My duties include maintaining the club P.O. box, collecting membership dues, reimbursing members for rally and award expenses, and paying recurring bills like corporation registration and National MVPA liability insurance premiums.  The club is actually getting a “two-for-one” deal because my wife, Deborah, really does all the hard work of logging in the financial transactions, balancing the club’s Wachovia checking account, and updating the monthly accounting spreadsheet.
